BIOGRAPHY: Dr. Sandra R. Baptista is a geographer and senior research associate in the Science Applications Division at the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) within the Earth Institute at Columbia University. She has served in her current position since 2011, working on projects that generate, use, and disseminate geospatial data to better understand human-environment systems and inform decision-making. She currently serves as co-investigator on the Geo-Referenced Infrastructure and Demographic Data for Development (GRID3) program funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Department for International Development (DFID) of the United Kingdom. Baptista holds a B.A. degree in Environmental Studies and Portuguese and Brazilian Studies from Brown University. She earned her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Geography from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey where she taught undergraduate courses in Geography and Human Ecology. Her dissertation research examined human-environment interactions in the Florianópolis city-region of Santa Catarina State, Brazil. She was an Earth Institute postdoctoral fellow hosted by CIESIN from 2008 to 2010.
