BIOGRAPHY: James Hansen is a Senior Research Scientist at the IRI. His research focuses on the challenge of supporting the resilience of smallholder agriculture in the developing world through climate services, climate-related insurance, and climate-informed food security management. From 2010 to 2019, he was part of the leadership team of the CGIAR research program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) where he led the Flagship on Climate Services and Safety Nets. Past research contributions included applications of agricultural systems methods to the use and valuation of climate information, farm economic risk and sustainability analysis, and land use under conflicting goals; communication of probabilistic climate information; spatial scaling in agro-ecosystem modeling; stochastic weather modeling; climate-based crop production forecasting; and intercrop ecology. He holds a PhD in agricultural and biological engineering from the University of Florida, and an MS in agronomy and soil science from the University of Hawaii.
