Charles specializes in environmental economics with a focus on agriculture, land use, ecosystem services, and climate change. Much of his research involves satellite data, remote sensing, and some machine learning.
Prior to academia, he worked for McKinsey & Company, the Gates Foundation, and The Earth Partners LP, the land and environmental investment company. He co-founded the Drylands Natural Resource Centre, a farmer-owned agro-forestry cooperative. Charles studied Economics and Political & Social Thought at the University of Virginia.
