Groundswell II: Climate Change Migration Analysis for the West Africa Coastal Areas Management Program and Ethiopia

Lead PI: Dr. Alexander de Sherbinin

Unit Affiliation: Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN)

October 2018 - August 2019

Africa ; West Africa ; East Africa ; Ethiopia ; Lake Victoria
Project Type: Research

DESCRIPTION: The project enhances a population gravity model first developed for the World Bank's Groundswell report (2018) to estimate the number of climate migrants out to 2050 under different emissions scenarios and socioeconomic pathways. The model projects population distributions with and without climate impacts on the crop and water sectors; differences are assumed to be owing to migration. Focus regions include West Africa, Lake Victoria Basin, and Ethiopia.
