Collaborative Research: Constraining Arc Processes Through Comprehensive Geochemical Study of the Chilean Southern Volcanic Zone

Lead PI: Dr. Joerg Michael Schaefer

Unit Affiliation: Geochemistry, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO)

August 2010 - July 2013
South America ; Chile
Project Type: Research

DESCRIPTION: The project seeks to expand on field work done by Swiss and Chilean scientists that have gathered extensive data on volcanos from the Southern Volcanic Zone to create a comprehensive data set to address whether mantle or crustal controlling magma composition.

OUTCOMES: Found that there is a correlation between 238U and 10Be that suggests crustal assimilation.
