Jeffrey Sachs
will become the Director of the Columbia Earth Institute in July
2002. Currently Director of the Center for International Development
at Harvard University, Sachs became internationally known in the
1980's for his work advising governments in Latin America, Eastern
Europe, the former Soviet Union, Asia, and Africa on economic reforms.
He is author or co-author of more than two hundred scholarly articles,
and has authored or edited many books. Sachs currently advises United
Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan on a group of poverty alleviation
initiatives called The Millennium Development Goals. A native of
Detroit, Michigan, Sachs received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees
at Harvard University. He has been a professor in the economics
department at Harvard since 1980.
