Pedro Sanchez is Director of the Tropical Agriculture program at the Earth Institute. He is also chair of the United Nations Task Force on Hunger for the Millennium Development Goals. In 2002, he received the World Food Prize for his pioneering work in tropical soils and agroforestry; he has spearheaded the use of inexpensive, naturally available resources to restore soil fertility, and has helped to increase crop yields for hundreds of thousands of small farmers from Brazil to Africa. In October of 2003, Pedro Sanchez was named a MacArthur Fellow. He was one of twenty-four recipients of the MacArthur grant, also known as a “genius award.”  Pedro Sanchez received a Ph.D. in Soil Sciences from Cornell University, and is a Professor Emeritus of Soil Science and Forestry at North Carolina State University .
