Field Trip to the Gowanus Watershed
The Gowanus Canal and Watershed in Brooklyn, New York, has served as a historic shipping and industrial zone since the 1800’s. The Watershed was originally a tidal inlet and saltwater marshland filled with wildlife. However, with European exploration, the building of mills and factories, and the creation of the Gowanus Canal as an important shipping lane, the Gowanus Watershed became heavily polluted to the point that the Watershed was placed in 2010 on the EPA’s Superfund National Priorities List. Contaminants include PCBs, coal tar wastes, heavy metals, and raw sewage. Come tour the Gowanus Watershed and listen to engineers explain their plans to restore the Gowanus Canal Corridor.

Field Trip to Via Verde
Via Verde was the winning entry to the New Housing New York Legacy Competition sponsored by the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development, and the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter. The innovative design represents the future of high quality, affordable, and sustainable housing. The building is estimated to be over 30% more energy efficient than a standard building, making use of rooftop solar panels, a storm water irrigation system, and rooftop gardens, which absorb rainwater runoff while providing opportunities for gardening. Each apartment also includes energy-efficient lighting, high-efficiency windows, super-sealed insulation, and water-conserving fixtures. Come tour this new model for affordable, green, and healthy urban living and learn about the growing field of sustainable urban development.
