The Earth Institute and the greater Columbia community have a longstanding commitment to the social and environmental issues affecting Haiti, the Caribbean, and other regions facing similar economic and ecological situations. The Earth Institute and Columbia offer a number of courses and resources to students to better prepare them for careers as scientists, practitioners and policymakers in subject areas related to environmental issues and sustainable development. 

The purpose of this section is to give students information related to Haiti relief efforts underway at the Earth Institute and Columbia University and issues of long-term poverty reduction, risk management and sustainable development.

In this section, you will find information and links to:

• Current Earth Institute and Columbia University projects related to Haiti relief efforts (both in response to and preceding the January 2010 seismic events). Students can look to them as examples of interdisciplinary projects designed to promote sustainable development.
• Links to student groups and databases connected to Haiti and other international poverty reduction and aid efforts
• Sample courses at Columbia University connected to the Haiti experience and other short- and long-term relief efforts around the world, including disaster prevention measures
