Hazards and Risk Reduction
Natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, droughts and landslides take an increasingly costly toll as the world’s population grows. Can we predict major earthquakes, and prepare better to reduce loss of life and property? How can we more precisely estimate the effects of climate on sea level rise, major storms, flooding and droughts? How can we plan ahead and improve our responses to natural disasters? Earth Institute researchers collaborate with institutions and governments around the world to apply the best science to these problems.
