On November 12-13, 2007, the NSF ADVANCE program at Columbia University convened a workshop on “Women, Minorities, and Interdisciplinarity: Transforming the Research Enterprise.” Co-sponsored by Barnard College and the Social Science Research Council, the workshop examined the connections between gender, ethnicity, race, and the interdisciplinary research agenda.
The workshop itself was interdisciplinary, as it brought together scholars from various academic disciplines to answer such questions as:
- Are women and minorities more likely to be drawn to interdisciplinarity?
- What are the real-world implications of having an interdisciplinary research framework?
- What characteristics of interdisciplinarity coincide with research programs sought out by specific social and ethnic groups?
